Edgewood would like to thank Nationwide Chilren's Hospital for the donation of 800 annual flowers and 30 bags of mulch that got the Karns Park Corner Garden underway in 2009.
We added a 15X15 flower bed at the corner of Thurman Ave and South Ohio. In additon there was a 6X2 flower bed around the Karns Park sign.
Can we all remember what Karns looked like only two short years ago?

Many of us are aware that the Green Space at Livingston Park had to come down due to the expansion of Nationwide Children's Hospital. Rather than store and forget these very specaial features, two City of Columbus communities received certian elements for their neighborhood parks. Edgewood worked hard to to receive three garden trellis that were installed on the corner of Ohio and Thurman Avenues.

A very special thanks to Turner Construction, Igle Site Development and Allied Sign Company that donated their time, resources and materials to the improvement of Karns Park. Of course we have very special to Robb Kelso and our friends at Keep Columbus Beautiful, Sherri Palmer and Bob Seed; and Columbus Recreation and Parks, Suzy Johnson, Maureen Lorenz, Mollie O'Donnell and Director Alan McKnight.
ADDITONAL KARNS PARK NEWS:
Nationwide Children’s Hospital (like last year) had an opportunity for neighborhoods to submit their application for their Beautification Grant. (Last year Edgewood was awarded 800 annual flowers and 30 bags of mulch for Karns Park)
This year NCH changed their process to distribute the grant application. This year three organizations in the immediate area received applications. Those organizations were: South Side Community Action Network, (SSCAN), Columbus South Side Area Commission, (CSSAC) and Columbus South Side Organizations, (CSSO). The only reason these organizations were permitted to apply is because they are members of the Good Neighbor Agreement with NCH, regardless of the work they actually perform for the community.
Lack of communication and follow through from the leader of SSCAN, CSSAC, & CSSO (all the same person) prevented Edgewood, Ganther’s Place or any other neighborhood within SSCAN boundaries to apply for the grant.
The only work that this person had to do, after receiving an email from David, was to pass along the application so that Edgewood could apply. This leader still failed to supply the required information, and the end result is: NO NEIGHBORHOOD WITH IN THE SSCAN BOUNDARIES WILL RECEIVE FLOWERS OR MULCH FROM NCH FOR ANY BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTS FOR PUBLIC ENJOYEMENT!
There are 15,00 cars (according to city stats) that pass through the intersection on Ohio and Thurman Avenue daily. What a shame it is that our friends and neighbors will not be able to enjoy all the efforts to make Karns Park a beautiful place to play, picnic, walk and view, due to lack of performance from a neighborhood leader.
Good news, The Barcelona Restaurant and Bar 263 E. Whitter St. in German Village has graciously donated seven (7) flats of flowers, and a few neighbors have split some perennials from their personal gardens for Karns Park. Just goes to show you, no matter how many curve balls that are thrown your way, Edgewood is resourceful, and we will make it happen.
